The Patterson Family

Scotland to North Carolina to Georgia to Mississippi to Texas

The first Patterson of this line is thought to have emigrated from Scotland, where and when unknown.  They appear in North Carolina in the mid 1700's.  They moved to Georgia in 1828 and then on to Missississippi by 1850, then on to Texas in the mid-1850's.

Origin of Isham Jones Patterson
Parents:  Warren Washington & Mary Ann Wier Patterson

Matthew Patterson

Born abt 1735 Scotland     Died bef 1820 BuncombeCo, NC

North Carolina

Matthew Patterson was listed as chain bearer on a survey in MecklenburgCo, NC 28 Apr 1768. John Patterson also appeared on the same document. Two land purchases were made by a Matthew Patterson in TryonCo, NC, 24 Dec 1770 for 300 acres on north side of Broad River and one on 18 Apr 1771 for 250 acres on the south side of Catawba River on Killion Creek. On 25 Jun 1772 the land was sold to Michael Engl and wife Barbara. Matthew was a surveyor on other documents. MecklenburgCo was established in 1762 from AnsonCo and TryonCo was established from MecklenburgCo in 1768. In 1779 TryonCo was split into LincolnCo and RutherfordCo on the west. The 1782 tax list of RutherfordCo lists a Matthew Patterson, in 1785 a member of Capt. Rankin's Company. He made a land purchase on Puzzle Creek of Second Broad River of 100 acres for 50 shillings. Land was sold to David Medlow in 1799. Matthew Patterson is listed on the 1790 census in household of two males 16+ and 3 females. On the same census were Joseph and Robert, both had small children. BuncombeCo became the westernmost NC county in 1791 and included western part of RutherfordCo. Matthew Patterson was listed in that county for 1800 and 1810 census with he and wife 45+. Both are estimated to be 65 yr old being born in Scotland abt 1735. They do not appear in the 1820 census. It is speculated that the above Matthew had a son Samuel Patterson and that Samuel was the father of Matthew Patterson, ancestor of Isham Jones Patterson of Texas.
