12-Pound Gunnade

An iron 12-pound gunnade fired through an embrasure at this point on the west wall.  As shown on the left, it was fronted by a semi-circular palisade and narrow trench.  In appearance, a gunnade looks like a combination of a cannon and a carronade and was sometimes used on ocean going merchant ships to meet insurance requirements. There is some evidence to suggest that it was mounted on a garrison carriage.
