Brazoria Courier in Brazoria, Texas, March 31, 1840

COL. CROCKETT. We find in our Austin papers a letter from an American gentleman, WM. C. WHITE, at Camargo, in Tamaulipas, dated 6th of February, 1840. The writer states that he has seen with his own eyes in the mines of Gendelejera [sic], in Mexico our own immortal CROCKETT, and heard from his own lips an account of his escape from the massacre at the Alamo.

We are afraid that this is news much too good to be true. To say the most, it is extremely improbable, and should be received with caution. Should it prove a hoax, it is one of the most cruel kind, and its author would deserve universal censure! It would start again the dried up tear, and renew the wail of mourning. There are hearts in Tennessee that would beat quicker at the news, and the name of Crockett would be a spell to all to arms thousands of her chivalry; and no design would seem too daring or too improbable, the object of which was the restoration of Crockett. Presid't LAMAR has written to the family of Col. CROCKETT, and also to our consul in New Orleans, communicating the intelligence.
